Boroondara Library Service operates across the City of Boroondara with locations in Ashburton, Balwyn, Camberwell, Hawthorn and Kew.
Each library is located on public transport routes and located in main centres throughout the municipality. Operating across 7 days per week for a total of 276 hours, the library service is rated highly by the community, receiving a satisfaction rating of 8.65% of 10, from the consultation conducted for the Boroondara Library Services Plan.
Boroondara Library Service holds a large public library collection of books, eresources and audio visual material for loan and a local history collection for reference. To accord with Boroondara’s demographic profile and identified community need, Library Services conducts a range of programs and special events to support literacy and reader development. Library Services works in collaboration with community and educational organisations to deliver projects that inspire ideas, support social inclusion, lifelong learning and a love of reading.
Annual visits to the five Boroondara library branches exceeded one million for the first time in 2013-14, fostered by Council’s investment in redevelopment of its branch libraries at Ashburton and Camberwell. Planning of the inclusion of a Library Lounge as part of the anticipated North East Hub is well advanced, with building works due to commence in 2017. In addition to the average of nearly 3,000 visits per day to its five branches, the library’s website (the virtual branch) also receives 1750 unique web hits per day.
